Common Problems Birds Cause

Birds can be a significant pest in the home or for businesses, especially those handling food, such as food warehouses, food processing factories and bakeries, where they can become a problem inside buildings. The common problems and issues which develop due to a bird infestation come in a range of options. They can range from damage to the structure of a property due to their nesting habits to the spread of diseases such as Salmonellosis through their droppings. You wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that common birds such as pigeons and gulls are considered pests purely because of their overpopulation, especially in built-up areas. In reality, however, pigeons have been known to carry and transmit some dangerous diseases, too.

Pigeons transmit diseases through their droppings. While we all know we shouldn’t touch or pick up pigeon droppings with our hands, it’s a bit trickier than that. Pigeon droppings that are infected with bacteria or viruses are often left on the street, windowsills and cars to dry out. Once they do, they become a powder, which is blown or kicked into the air and then inhaled. The inhalation of this powder is one way that the pathogens that can cause disease can be spread to humans.

Below are the common problems caused by pigeons and other birds:

DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS

Larger birds such as pigeons can dislodge roof tiles. Bird droppings corrode stone, metal, paintwork and other building materials, while birds gaining access to roof spaces can damage insulation. The damage can result in high cost of repairs for the building owners.

THEY CARRY PARASITES

Parasites can be found in bird droppings, but that is not all. Parasites, such as fleas and ticks, can take up residence on nuisance birds. Once these pests have been introduced to your property, it is only a matter of time before they become a problem for you and your families.

BLOCKING OF VENTILATION

Pigeons like the fresh air vent as a result of constant air movement, covered area from inclement weather and nesting place for the families. The fresh air intake, if not broken through, will cause clogging of the screen restricting air flow and fresh air into the building.

BLOCKING OF DRAINAGE SYSTEMS

Nests block guttering and drain pipes leading to flooding on the roof, which can then become breeding sites for flying and biting insects. The flooding can cause internal leaks, rotten timbers, metal corrosion, damaged plaster and other wall coverings and flooring inside the building.

CAUSES FOUL SMELL TO THE ENVIRONMENT

Unsightly droppings can build up in roosting sites, foul paved areas nearby, causing a slip and fall risk for staff in businesses and members of the public in urban areas. Birds also foul vehicles parked nearby, and for businesses spoil raw materials and finished goods thereby causing financial loss.

SPREAD OF DISEASES

Bird droppings can contain many types of bacteria, viruses and parasites which can contaminate food, surfaces and goods. The pathogens in the bird droppings include Salmonella, E. coli and Histoplasma, which can then infect people handling the goods and eating contaminated food.
